Vloggers Summit in NYC: A Smashing Success!

This past Saturday marked the first ever mini Vloggers Summit at the World Center Hotel here in NYC. Myself and 10 other vloggers came together to share their tips and successes in order to help take each other, and the travel vlogger industry, to the next level. The turnout was impressive, the conversation was impactful and big ideas were generated.

With our powers we are Captain Vlogger!

Since traveling is in our nature, many didn’t hesitate to fly in from around the globe. We had Gariné Tcholakian from Montreal, Juliana Broste & Ryan Van Duzer from Colorado, Gareth Leonard from upstate New York and the rest came in from boroughs throughout NYC. We even had a slew of vloggers virtually attending via a Google Hangout. Sidenote: sadly, Kate from Travels with Kate & Nate from World Wide Nate were held up at the airport given the Friday, November 1st terrifying shooting (Kate was in the terminal!).

Listening hard or hardly listening?

Don’t mess with Frida

Back at the summit, did I mention that costumes were mandatory? Being Halloween weekend and since vloggers tend to be an outgoing bunch, we all decided it was mandatory to attend in costume. This might sound more like play than work, but it actually was a focused afternoon, even if Frida Kahlo & Lady Gaga were interjecting past experiences.

Ladies of History

Our main goals were to determine how we measure our ROI/ROE when working with brands & PR firms. The question of how to value ourselves is always tough–but the sentiment in the room was that we are undervaluing ourselves. We also discussed tips for reaching new audiences and the potential of collaborations with each other and other brands. Personally, I felt the creative energy in the room was high and a lot of ideas were sparked for me and the other attendees. I am confident that creating this cohesive group will only serve to make us a stronger individually, which will have an impact on the industry as a whole. The ball has been set in motion by this summit! Thanks to all that attended and be on the lookout for more from the attendees listed below.

Find Your Magic

I’m a travel addict and I think that all destinations are beautiful, like my hometown of New York City. But it’s more than just beauty that I’m looking for. I’m looking for those unique magical moments where you know that you’ve truly discovered the soul of a place.

Morocco has always seemed like a magical place to me—full of exotic tastes, vibrant colors, boisterous medinas and Ingrid Bergman glamor, sweeping sand dunes and glittering ocean views; all under the rhythmic call to prayer. And I feel a destination’s magic is created by it’s people. I want to seize opportunities to meet the locals, laugh and learn with them– and understand their country through their eyes.

I will meet the local storytellers and here their tales of travel, adventures and love.

I will see the tanners in Fez dye their leathers the in vats of colors, the same way for hundreds of years.

I want to ride camels into the desert with a band of Berbers as the sun goes down and share a meal with them under the starry night.

I want to meet the women that run the argan oil cooperatives and talk to them about how they produce this liquid gold.

And since the food is such an integral part of Moroccan culture, I hope find a local chef who’s willing to show me a thing or two about creating spicy couscous or a thick harrira.

It’s through the experiences with the people that I’ll Find my magic Morocco.

Kelley’s 2013 Golden Globe Fashion Awards

I think most of the reason that any girl watches the Golden Globes is for the Red Carpet dresses. They seriously add so much drama, jealousy and sex appeal to an otherwise not as eventful award show.

This year the looks were so outstanding, I had a hard time deciding. But there was no middle ground. The other half went with completely ridiculous outfit choices. Here’s my take.

10. Tiny Fey

-What a transformation this woman has gone through, but that first blue sequined dress made us forget all about [Space Lesbians]. Too bad she clearly was uncomfortable the way she kept awkwardly cocking her arm out and doing the “I think this is flattering hand-at-hip” pose.

9. Lea Michelle

-Though the minute she speaks I want to scratch her from this list, I have to give the girl credit for looking surprisingly drop dead gorgeous in this outfit.

8. Jessica Chastain

–I appreciate a bold move and that dress was bold. I oscillated from love to hate but I think love wins out for how well it works with her coloring and how she did not have a nip slip. Her shellacked hair frightened and awed.

7. Claire Danes

-She had a baby like 5 minutes ago and still looks incredible. She must be really really hungry.

6. Amy Poehler

-Sexy but understated, fun but smart: Amy P. rocked last night and this newly single, hilarious actress was a far cry from Leslie Knope.

5. Julianne Hough
-Can she ever do anything wrong? Her only improvement could be that diminutive, wind-up toy on her arm.

4. Sofia Vergara
-The usually eye-popping Vergara kept it sexy but CLASSIC Hollywood with this dress. A+

3. George Clooney’s Girlfriend

-I can’t for the life of me think of her name, which I think proves the point that she has perfected the silent arm candy role which is exactly what this silver fox wants.

2. Jessica Alba
-I actually want this dress. (And her skin, body, face…etc)

Grand Prize Winner: Kate Hudson

-I couldn’t look away. Neckline, plunge, her smoky eyes…Mesmirizing.

Runners-up: Hayden PannetierreHeidi Klum, Lucy Liu

Kelley’s “WTF Were You Thinking” awards goes to:

8. Katniss Everdeen    Jennifer Lawrence

-She’s doesn’t look terrible and probably doesn’t deserve to be on this list, but tonight was a big night for her and the pointy boobs and unexciting makeup/hair did not do her justice. Own it J. Law!

7. Guiliana Rancic

-I hate to say this but I don’t feel badly at all that she looks ridiculous.

6. Jodi Foster

-The only thing worse than the dress is the haircut. And the only thing worse than the haircut was her awards speech.

5. Sienna Miller

-When you are that naturally pretty, you have to go to some great lengths to mess it up. Congrats Sienna.
4. Lena Dunham

-COME ON. Everyone wants to love you. You are an impressive writer/director/actor that brought herself up by her bootstraps. We get that you don’t care about body image (applause) and that you are awesome the way you are BUT that brown dress did not flatter you at all and actually looked like it was about to fall off, which no one really wanted to see. It’s okay Lena, you need time to work out the kinks.

3. Rachel Weisz
-You have Bond on your arm and you wear that? Take a lesson from past Bond Girls next time please. All gold is start.

2. J LO
-No one every told you about “leaving something to the imagination,” huh? Is that even sexy? I think it’s just uncomfortable to look at.

Grand Prize: Helena Bonham Carter
-I’m not even surprised. She looks exactly like the same deranged, gothic witch that she plays in every role.

Runners-Up: Emily Mortimer

Thanks for reading. Rarely do I care much about fashion but I had to vent. Back to travel.
